Marijuana: What Preventionists Need to Know

For over 20 years our state’s youth marijuana use has been significantly higher than the United States rate (2021 NM Substance Use Epidemiology Profile). In 2021 New Mexico legalized the recreational use of marijuana for people 21 and over. It is important for preventionists to be familiar with this drug as we consider the impacts increased availability may have and implement prevention strategies for it in our communities. This training will provide a general overview of the cannabis plant and how its chemical components get people high and the difference between hemp and marijuana. How marijuana effects the entire body, consequences for short- and long-term use, and evidence-based and best practice prevention strategies will also be reviewed. Inhalants: What Preventionists Need to Know

Participants will explore what substances people inhale for intoxicating effects, the short- and long-term effects of inhalant misuse, symptoms of inhalant misuse, and will review evidence based and best or promising practices to prevent inhalant misuse. This is an instructor lead nine (9) day course, meaning participants will complete the entire training online at their own pace, with the assistance of a facilitator.  This training will provide participants with the knowledge they need to be a resource on inhalant misuse in their community.

Exploring Prevention Ethics in Your Organization’s Services

Incorporating a code of ethics into the way an organization operates requires commitment and intentional work. As preventionists, we have a specific code of ethics that outlines our responsibilities to the public, to service recipients, and to colleagues within and outside of the prevention field. Further, if we are a Certified Prevention Specialist, or are pursuing certification, we are required to behave in alignment with this code of ethics. This training will provide participants the opportunity to explore how the prevention code of ethics is, or is not, supported within their organization. Then, practical ways to strengthen and/or support the prevention code of ethics will be identified. This training is ideal for leaders, managers, coordinators, and experienced preventionists who actively work to improve the effectiveness of prevention services within their organization. Note: This is an advanced training. Participants are required to have taken Ethics for Prevention Professional (or similar introductory prevention ethics training). Prerequisite training will be verified for each participant.
